Tydavnet Tidy Towns Group
Tydavnet tidy towns group is a small band of volunteers (including a new group of Junior Tidy Towns members) from the village and surrounds who are committed to the upkeep and maintenance of the village for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. We meet fortnightly in the summer month’s and as required in the winter and spring. We plant flower beds, hanging baskets, carry out painting, sweeping and watering programmes in competing in the National tidy towns competition organised by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government every year. This year we achieved a mark of 260 points up 6 on last years total but it is not the marks but the favourable comment we hear from passers by and locals of how well the village looks that is most rewarding. Anyone interested in becoming involved with the tidy towns committee just mention it to any of the list below and I’m sure we will find a role for you!

Funding: We ran a very successful dance in 2001 which proved so successful that we have not had to fund raise since. We apply for and receive a grant from the Environmental Fund of Monaghan County council annually and some donations which go a long way to funding us for the year. This year we were delighted to receive a cheque from Tydavnet Dramatic Troupe for €350 and we want to thank them most sincerely for their generosity.

Looking ahead: Success in Tidy Towns doesn’t come easily, it takes a lot of money, time, but most of all hard work and attention to detail. Though the competition categories have changed immensely, Tydavnet Tidy Towns group has made significant progress over the last number of years. There is a great emphasis on biodiversity, sustainable waste management, recycling, and education. But, cleanliness, absence of litter and an appealing image are still important. Judging season is now upon us, and we ask that everyone in the village, or passing through, takes care to leave the village in a pristine condition. It’s not just for the Tidy Towns competition – it’s for US! Lots of visitors arrive for holidays, weddings, and other events, please ensure they remember our village for the right reasons.
