Many people travelled from all parts of Ireland and abroad for Michael Rooney’s acclaimed music composition “Macalla 1916” commemorating the Easter Rising when it returned to the Garage Theatre, Monaghan on Saturday 29th October 2016. The outstanding musical production featuring the Macalla orchestra of 58 musicians of harps, flutes, fiddles, accordions, percussion, uilleann pipes, concertinas, banjos, violins, double bass, cello, piano, trumpet, and French horn, along with singers Pat Fulton and Shauna McGarrigle, resulted in 2 sellout shows for this home venue. With script by Tommy Gorman, (RTE Northern Editor); Ed Mulhall, (award winning TV producer and director), and Cathal Goan, (former Director General of RTE), the composition traces the history of Ireland from the Blighted Landscape of Ireland in the 1800s, through the Gaelic revival, the clash of traditions, the Easter Rising, to a changed Ireland with a visit from the Queen of England, to a modern day Ireland with many different ethnicities living side by side in peace and harmony. Narrators were John McArdle and Gabrielle Tuomey, both with excellent records in staging dramatic productions. The show has one more performance in the Garage Theatre, Monaghan on Sunday 30th October 2016. It’s an amazing show, anyone who missed the opportunity to get tickets really missed an outstanding production from Michael. The community congratulates Michael on another wonderful celebration of our heritage, and we wish him continued success.
