Although the committee was unsuccessful in a recent application for funding for upgrades to the School, work is ongoing to get prepared for any further grants that might occur in the future. The building needs a lot of repairs before it’s beyond salvage; initially the Phase 1 plan is to replace the lean-to roof at rear of school to match existing, repair and replace the fascia board in a period design with pitch pine, painted to best conservation practice, and stone wall pointing to prevent water ingress. The building has significant historical, social, architectural, economic and use value for the community. Anyone who wishes to get involved in the project is very welcome as it’s a unique and beautiful piece of our local heritage, and a wonderful venue for many local events. We thank Monaghan County Council for their very generous support for Cornagilta School.
