Anyone driving around the Sliabh Beagh Fermanagh border area will see the area much brighter this summer with many brightly painted “art shelters” springing up on rural roads. The artwork is part of an initiative where already 18 shelters have been painted with funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, with the paintings done by a number of artists, some local and some from Belfast. While we often see artwork and murals in built up areas, the Sliabh Beagh artwork is confined to more rustic items like bales and bus shelters. The project has created great interest and increased cultural tourism in the wider Sliabh Beagh area, with people coming to the area to view them and tag them on Facebook. Watch out for them when you’re out and about!
