Walks: The U3A walk on Wednesday, February 19th will take place at The Greenway. Meet at The Four Seasons Hotel Car Park at  10.30 a.m.

AGM: Thanks to all who attended the AGM of the U3A on Friday, February 7th, during which we looked back at the previous year’s wide range of activities and trips, in Ireland and to the UK. We also remembered those who are no longer with us.  Geraldine, the Chairperson thanked the Committee who did Trojan work to enable everything to happen throughout the year, ably assisted by many of our members when required. She further thanked Eamonn Callaghan who has been Secretary for the last few years, a job he carried out meticulously and diligently,  and who has contributed so much to the U3A as one of the original founders. She also thanked Pauric and Ronan from Monaghan Soccer Club at Gortakeegan, who have been more than accommodating, as Gortakeegan is now HQ for the U3A. Agnes McElvaney gave the Treasurer’s Report and informed us that the Accounts will be audited by Kelly Rahill & Co. Accountants, Cavan. The Election of Officers was overseen by Tony Keenan. Geraldine Kelly, remained as  Chairperson. No Vice Chair elected yet. Secretary; Gerard O’Toole, Vice Secretary; Maura Mohan. Treasurer; Agnes McElvaney; Vice Treasurer; Carmel Brady. Registration; Joan O’Hanlon and Jane Flynn. PRO: Mary Devlin. Vice PRO; Ann Murray. The existing Committee were all re-elected.

U3A’s Annual Party: The U3A’s Annual Party will take place at Rossmore Golf Club on Friday, February 28th. Music by Michael McGorman. Admission €15. Text 087 3432275 to confirm your attendance as we need to notify the Golf Club of expected numbers.

How’re ya Keeping?: This is a new Reaching Out Programme to  U3A members by U3A Members. Are you currently unable to get out for whatever reason and would like someone to ”make a ceili”. Two members of the U3A would be delighted to stop by to see “how’re ya keeping” at your invitation. Text/Call  086 804 7575 and let us know if you would like a visit.

Trip to York: To date, we have confirmed that the Trips to Harrowgate in York will take place on the 4th and 11th of May, 2020. The trips will be for 4 nights, B & B and Dinner. The cost is  €470 per person sharing and €570 for single. This includes all entrances, coach, boat and hotel. Possible trips will include Castle Howard, Haworth Bronte House, and City Cruise. Some places still remaining, including 4 Singles for Week 1 and 2 Singles for Week 2. The other available Rooms are double or twin. If travelling, please ensure you have your own Travel Insurance. Trips Abroad: The cities voted for by U3A Members to visit in October 2020 are:

 Prague, Paris or Krakow.  

Prague; October 18th -22nd. 4 nights. €399 per person sharing.

Paris; October 19th -23rd. 4 nights. €549 per person sharing.

Krakow; October 11th -14th. 3 nights. €390 per person sharing.

Swimming: Any U3A Members who would like a Swim, are welcome to go to The Four Seasons Hotel on Thursdays, between 12.00 and 2.00 p.m. The cost is just €5 and you do not need to be a Member of The Four Seasons Leisure Club.   In addition to this, a Water Aerobics Class is now available on Fridays at 11.00 a.m. Cost is also €5

Poems and Pints: The next Poems and Pints will take place on February 20th at Maggie Charlie’s in Ballinode at around 8.00 or so.

Book Club: The book for our next  Book Club meeting is “Conversation with Friends” by Sally Rooney. It is now available in the Library. Please state it is for the U3A Book Club when you are picking it up. Next Book Club will take place in The Four Seasons as usual at 3.15 on Thursday, February 27th.

Coffee and Craic: Every Wednesday in Smithboro’ hall around 3.00 p.m. Drop in for an informal Coffee or Tea and a chat. All welcome. Also, Coffee in Grahams from 10.30 a.m. on every Thursday.

Annual Renewal: Please note that Annual Renewal is January 2020. Put your money in the Envelopes provided in the Age Action Shop.  €15 for one person, €20 per couple.

Date for your Diary: The next Monthly Talk will be held at Gortakeegan on Friday, February 28th. It will be given by Greg Devlin, Marketing Manager at Silver Hill Foods. The topic is “Silver Hill Foods, Past, Present and Future”. Greg will trace the journey of Silver  Foods from its humble beginnings by Ronnie and Leila Steele, with 6 ducks, 55 years ago, to the rapidly growing company, that is now 70% export led, supplying its unique duck to 24 countries worldwide, and will also let us know  their plans for the future. This is a wonderful human interest story. Come along and enjoy. Refreshments after.
