he 2019 Independent Games Festival Awards kicked off the beginning of the Game Developers Choice Awards on March 20. Rather than covering the extremely polished games of the GDC Awards, the IGF Awards focuses on the video games of the indie scene. These games might go unnoticed by the mainstream, but the IGF Awards acknowledges the labor and talent that went into them.

This year’s festival contained several stand-out winners. For instance, it came as no surprise that “Return of the Obra Dinn” won the Excellence in Narrative award. This mystery game by Lucas Pope has earned several awards from this category in various shows. It also won the Grand Prize at this year’s IGF Awards. However, there were some pleasant surprises, such as when “Opus Magnum” won the Excellence in Design award, taking the title among several other equally deserving contenders.
