Trip to Glenn Miller: The bus to Dublin for the Glenn Miller on Sunday 15th October will leave Ballinode at 11.45 and McNally’s yard, Monaghan at 12 am. The bus will stop at Applegreen on the way up for a refreshment break and then proceed to the NCH in Dublin. One place has become available, if interested text or ring 0873432275.
Conference: We have our bi-annual conference this year on Thursday 26th October in the Four Seasons hotel. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘The Intergeneration Game, Generations Together.’ We have a wide range of speakers who will discuss how Monaghan is an enterprising and age friendly county. Speakers in the morning include Dr. Catherine Conlon who will speak on Changing Generations, Briege Quinn, Local Enterprise Officer, Martin McVicar, Combilift, and Professor John Fitzgerald, Chairman of Climate Change Advisory Council. It should prove to be a very interesting event showing how people of different generations help and depend on one another. Entrance is 10 euro for U3A members and 20 euro for non members, this includes coffee/tea and lunch. Computer classes: Age Action is providing computer classes in St. Joseph’s Pastoral centre, Thursdays 10.30 to 11.30. St. Louis TY students will be providing one to one tuition. Bring your ipad or phone to learn more about how to get the best out of it.
Flower Arranging will take place in St. Patrick’s hall, upstairs hall, at 8pm. The dates for the flower arranging are Tuesday 24th October, 14th November and 28th November. If interested please phone or text Flo on 0863205941 before Friday 13th October, leave your name and number.
Walks: The next Walk is on Wednesday October 18th. Gosford Park, Markethill is this week’s walk. Meet at the Four Seasons hotel at 10.00. No dogs please. Details of the Walks can be found on the website
The Book Club: This month’s book is ‘Munich’ by Robert Harris. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday 25th October at 2.30 in the Four Seasons hotel. Please note the change of day due to the conference.
Flexibility/Balance and Strength Class: U3A is running a flexibility class for all members that will keep you supple and help fitness. Classes take place in the Gym club, Milltown Business Park, Monaghan, Thursdays at 9.45 am. This is an ideal opportunity to get fit and supple and improve balance. Classes finish in time if you want to head into Graham’s for coffee afterwards! To get to the gym club, turn into the Business Park in Milltown and turn left and through the gates to the club. There are still a few places available if you wish to join in.
Choir: Choir has begun on Tuesdays, 11.30 to 1.00 in the Market House. There has been an enthusiastic response to the choir. Come and sing your heart out, the choir is for all, men and women, singers and those who like to sing along.
The Film club is held in Smithboro’ Presbyterian hall at 7.30 as usual. Tuesday 24th October is the next date for the club. The choice will be between ‘Jackie’ and ‘ La La Land’. Come along and choose your Oscar nominated film and enjoy a cuppa afterwards.
Line Dancing: Line Dancing began in St. Joseph’s Pastoral centre, Monaghan on October 16th from 11am to 12pm. The course is eight weeks long and costs 25 euro. Line Dancing class is also available in Tydavnet Community Centre from October 17th, 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Line dancing is now full and there is a lengthy waiting list.
Texting: We are investigating a new system of texting with a texting service called Teamer. If you get a text from Teamer, it is legitimate and is from the U3A.
Classes are as follows, all classes are in the Market House unless otherwise stated.
Chess: Mondays in Monaghan Library from 2.00pm until about 4.00pm. While classes have been deferred until further notice, some avid chess enthusiasts are meeting in the Library on Mondays.
Irish: Mondays beginning on 16th October, 2.30pm
French: Tuesdays, 2.15pm, bienvenue to beginners and improvers.
Spanish will be starting again in early October, on Wednesdays.
Sculpture: Will resume on Mondays, Alison Bole’s studio. Sculpture class is now full, those wishing to do Sculpture will be put on a waiting list.
Bowling has resumed in Slieve Beagh hotel, Mondays at 8.00.
Cards will begin in October when the evenings draw in.
Computers in Monaghan Library will commence in early November. Age Action is currently organising classes on a one to one basis, if interested call Age Action on 014756989 to book a place. See notice above.
Art: There will be an Art class beginning on 7th November and going on until the 19th December. Venue as usual is the Market House, Tuesdays at 11am. Art classes are now full.
A trip to Peadar Morgan’s Wildlife centre is being planned. A pleasant afternoon will be spent in November seeing Peadar’s amazing collection. Tea, coffee, sandwiches and apple tart will be provided. More information and cost will follow soon.
We hope to have another general Coffee morning in St. Joseph’s Pastoral centre in December, One of our members, Pat Golden, will give a cake icing demonstration. It should be a lovely morning with a Christmas flavour.
Finally we will have a trip to Yorkshire to look forward to it next May. Staying in Harrowgate we will visit many places of interest.
